A salute to Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd is one of the great rock bands of all time. As a way to homage to their music, concerts.com is featuring the full length directors cut of Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii, and a FREE downloadable concerts.com original Pink Floyd poster that is inspired by several of Pink Floyd’s albums.
Pink Floyd were an English rock band that achieved international success with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and musically influential groups in the history of popular music.
Founded in 1965, the group originally consisted of university students Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard Wright and Syd Barrett. They first gained popularity performing in London’s underground music scene during the late 1960s, and under Barrett’s creative leadership they released two charting singles and a successful début album. David Gilmour joined as a fifth member in December 1967, and Barrett left the band in April 1968 due to his deteriorating mental health. After Barrett’s departure, Waters became their primary songwriter and lyricist. With Waters, Mason, Wright and Gilmour, Pink Floyd achieved critical and commercial success with the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979).
Wright left the group in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985. Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd and Wright subsequently joined them as a paid musician. They continued to record and tour through 1994; two more albums followed, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). They have sold more than 250 million albums worldwide, including 74.5 million certified units in the United States. They were inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
Powerman 5000 09/15/12: Austin’s Fuel Room – Libertyville, IL
Words can’t describe how excited I was for this concert as it had been a year since I had last seen Powerman 5000. I Usually when you mention Powerman 5000, you get a response as “They still exist” well yes they still exist and if you are a diehard fan you would know they have a new album out. Yes folks it’s true you need to get the with program because Powerman 5000 is as good as ever.
The Roxy on the Sunset Strip has seen the likes of almost every rock star on their stage. When you walk into the dark club you feel like you’re in a private club. With two bars & a VIP corded off section with tables, you become one with the venue.
We were at The Roxy to see an awesome band, Awaken The Empire. When Daryl starts beating on his drums, Shivan starts shredding on guitar, and with Vince on bass, the crowd passionately cheers because they know what’s coming: Damien, the sultry, tall & amazing performer.
When you hear Damien’s strong voice, along with his owning the stage, you wonder why this band isn’t playing arenas. When Damien sings “Cross My Heart” your hairs stand on edge. What a vocal range. He comes across like Steven Tyler meets Jared Leto, YET, Damien is, well, Damien with a style all his own.
At one point a ring falls from his finger & girls scramble for it. He then takes all of his rings off & gives them to the girls. He removes his vest & throws that into the crowd. Then he throws a bottle of water onto the crowd. Yes, we got quite wet, but, it was enjoyable.
Damien ends the show by going into the crowd, on his knees singing. This young man is a rock star without the rock star attitude.
If you have the chance to see Awaken The Empire, please go. They play from the heart. Pure rock music. No gimmicks. No lip syncing. No back tracks. They are one of LA’s finest!
